Think Tank with Hakeem al-Araibi & Tonii Tran

Join us for an intimate lunch as Hakeem al-Araibi, Australian footballer and Tonii Tran, Approved Provider of Starfish Early Learning share their stories.

Hakeem Al-Araibi, a former Bahrain national team footballer who was persecuted because of his religion in his home country, fled from Qatar whilst on duty with the Bahrain national team participating in the West Asian Championships in 2014.

He arrived in Australia in May 2014 and applied for asylum which was granted in November 2017. He married in 2018 and arrived in Bangkok for his honeymoon in November 2018, where he was immediately detained by local police acting on an Interpol warrant for his return to Bahrain on trumped up charges of vandalism. After months of action by Human Rights activists, TV commentator Craig Foster and the Australian Government he was finally released from detention in Thailand in February, 2019 and became an Australian citizen in March 2019.

Tonii Tran, Approved Provider of 5 Starfish Early Learning Centres, will sit in the Think Tank "Hot seat", and share her journey from her early years as a refugee to a busy and successful life as a provider of early learning services.

Tonii was born in Saigon, Vietnam and was 3 when she arrived in Australia on 31 December 1977, having made the journey with her parents, 4 year old brother and 68 other passengers on a fishing boat to escape the harsh North Vietnamese regime. While she doesn’t remember this trip she does remember their first settlement in Australia, the Enterprise Hostel in Springvale. Tonii well remembers the joy and freedom of living in a community that was safe and secure.
