Recent media reports, including the ABC’s Four Corners program, have highlighted cases of child safety breaches within the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) sector. These incidents, while deeply concerning, had already been addressed by the relevant authorities prior to their airing.
As an organisation committed to the highest standards of care, ACA Victoria acknowledges the distress such reports may cause to families and educators. However, it is important to recognise that these cases do not reflect the broader sector, where the vast majority of services—including our members—work tirelessly to provide safe, high-quality early learning environments.
Data from the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) demonstrates that 91% of early learning services meet or exceed the National Quality Standard (NQS), reinforcing the sector’s strong commitment to child safety and well-being.
ACA Victoria’s Commitment to Supporting Our Members
We understand that media reports on serious incidents can be unsettling for educators, service providers, and families alike. As a member organisation, we encourage our services to:
- Engage openly with families—acknowledge their concerns, reassure them of the robust safety measures in place, and encourage ongoing dialogue.
- Support educators—recognise the dedication of our workforce and provide access to well-being resources such as Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) where available.
- Use this as a learning opportunity—review existing child safety policies, reinforce best practices, and reflect as a team on how to continuously strengthen child safety culture.
Ongoing Professional Development & Networking Opportunities
To further support our members, ACA Victoria offers professional development sessions, networking events, and conferences that focus on quality child education, leadership, and sector best practices. These events provide valuable insights, practical strategies, and the opportunity to connect with industry experts and peers.
